Thyme is a widespread plant in the Mediterranean area where it has long been used as a spice and medicinal plant. In the 11th century, thyme spread to monasteries in other parts of Europe where it is still grown today. Its name comes from the Greek word “thymus” meaning courage.
Thyme essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of a fresh plant in bloom. It takes about 150 kg of plant material to obtain 1 kg of essential oil.
Thyme essential has traditionally been used for its strong microbicidal effect, and stimulation of excretion of excess water and harmful metabolic substances from the body.
